E-News - August 5, 2016

August 5, 2016  |  1  Av 5776

From our CEO...
I would like to welcome back the nine Omaha Jewish teens who represented our community and participated in the 2016 JCC Maccabi Games in St. Louis this past week. Team Omaha includes Zoe Berman, Charlie Cohen, Lev Denenberg, Laura Kirshenbaum, Max Kohll, Rachel Kricsfeld, Leora McNamara, Jared Murray, and Ryan Patterson. When you see them, please congratulate and thank them for representing our community. I would also like to thank Rachel Martin, our JCC BBYO / Teen Director and Jonathan Crossley, JCC Assistant Director of Athletics & Basketball Coordinator.  Their dedication and generosity to our teens is amazing.

This Sunday, the 15th Annual Omaha Jewish Film Festival kicks off with an Israeli comedy specially selected and sponsored by the Program Administrators of the Klutznick Chair - Dr. Leonard Greenspoon, Steve Riekes, and Marty Shukert. Variety magazine says this: "A hilarious, fast-paced satire with a pro-peace message, Atomic Falafel encompasses the Israel-Iran nuclear showdown, the Internet friendship of two teens from the opposing countries, a youthful hacker's first romance, and a falafel maker's discovery of a new love."  More about the opening night, a link to future films, and a listing of our generous sponsors can be seen below.
When you join us for Sunday's film or anytime you are on campus this month, please visit the art gallery and take a walk through time. The Campfire Memories Exhibit is the result of a collaboration between the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society and the Jewish Press. Join us on Sunday 3-5pm for the reception of this exhibit. For more details, click here. Many thanks to Annette van de Kamp-Wright, the staff of the Jewish Press, Renee Corcoran and the NJHS, and interns Emily Newman and Solomon Marburg. Enjoy the memories and be sure to leave a comment!
Shabbat Shalom,
Alan Potash

Howard Epstein & Steve Levinger Participate in Multigenerational Family Philanthropy Training
Over the next 30 years, an estimated $30 trillion will be passed down from Baby Boomers and their parents to younger generations. The potential impact of these funds on Jewish Federations and the myriad programs and services they support cannot be understated.

To help manage this transition in Omaha, Howard Epstein, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Omaha Foundation, and Steve Levinger, Chief Development Officer of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, were chosen to participate in a comprehensive national philanthropic training program made possible through collaboration between the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) and 21/64.

"We gained valuable insight about family dynamics when multiple generations are engaged in a family's charitable giving, and we brought back many tools that families in Omaha's Jewish community will find useful as they develop their family philanthropic goals and values. It is essential to build and strengthen relationships among families and their professional advisors and to open new paths for multigenerational philanthropic involvement," said Epstein.

This, That, and the Other Thing
Certainly not the exact outcome she was seeking after 44 years of fighting, but THIS is an approximation, and she's settling for it - for now.

Jewish music with a Caribbean Flair? THAT can't be - but it is. Learn more

THE OTHER THING is that there are athletes, and then there are Olympic athletes. And then there are Jewish Olympic athletes. Here are seven Jewish American athletes to watch in Rio.
