Attention, all Star Deli devotees. Here’s some food for thought regarding the featured entrees for February Friday Delis — along with one Tuesday night Deli — plus some fun-filled Deli activities. You’ll be lickin’ your chops for several weeks, that’s for sure. And for the record, the Deli tzedakah box proceeds benefit L.O.V.E. in February. (Think Valentines…)
Friday, Feb. 1: Groundhog Day featuring Sloppy Joes and Ground Hog Day-movie. Question of the week: Will RBJH staffer Adrienne’s “Ground-dogs” (Punxsutawney Tamale and Punxsutawney Burrito) see their shadows or not? Gotta be there to find out how much longer Omaha’s winter will last.
Friday, Feb. 8: Chinese New Year Celebration with Stellar Stir Fry. Confucius say, He who eats at Star Deli is Deli Star.
Friday, Feb. 22: Dairy Deli in honor of Purim and Queen Esther. Costumes are encouraged, and free desserts will be awarded. Start digging around in your dress-up box and have some fun.
Tuesday, Feb. 26: Purim Deli Brisket Dinner. It’s a Tuesday. It’s a night Deli. It’s your chance to get out of the kitchen and let someone else do the cooking and cleanup. (Plus, there’s simply no disguising how yummy this meal will be. Get it? Get it? Purim. Get it?)
Looking ahead, we’re told that a very special deli menu is planned for Friday April 5, when Chef Mike Aparo marks his 50th birthday. And the Gargantuan Goldberg Sandwich Challenge is scheduled for Friday, April 12. The event is open to as many teams of two, very hungry people that we can find. Teams that finish an entire Goldberg Sandwich get the sandwich for free, $10 Deli gift cards and the admiration of their fellow Deli-goers.
And remember. In addition to weekly specials, the Friday Star Deli always offers its traditional menu items — corned beef, pastrami, smoked turkey, egg or tuna salad sandwiches along with ever-popular salads and sides. The Star Deli on Main Street — with its garlicky aromas and the raucous atmosphere of a Lower East Side eatery — is open on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Deli is happy to host special occasions and will reserve private dining spaces in the RBJH for large groups.
