E-News - March 17, 2017

March 17, 2017  |  19  Adar 5777

From our CEO...
In the past few newsletters I have updated the community on the increase of bomb threats to Jewish institutions in North America.  Until this week we were not one of those communities.  On Wednesday morning, the Omaha JCC received a bomb threat.  We immediately implemented our security protocols and coordinated efforts with the Omaha Police Department, the OPD bomb squad and the FBI.  Following the incident I sent out an update to the community as soon as possible.  In the event an incident like this were to happen again and to guard against inaccurate information being shared on social media, please wait to post until after the Jewish Federation of Omaha has released an official statement.  The amount of information released is limited so as not to inspire copy cats.  This threat, like all the others that have targeted Jewish organizations recently, turned out to be a hoax.  Be assured we will always take threats seriously and respond in ways that safeguard the lives of our members, families and staff.  I want to acknowledge the attention and diligence the Omaha Police Department demonstrated in addressing this incident.  I also want to recognize the professional effort our employees make every day to create a safe and welcoming campus.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We have set up an email address dedicated to security concerns  - security@jewishomaha.org.

Shabbat Shalom,
Alan
Young Jewish Giving

Under the leadership of Young Jewish Giving (YJG) program director Danielle Gordman, 43 new donor advised funds have been established with a least $500 for Jewish middle school and high school students over the last seven months. The mission of YJG is to empower teens and college-aged students to make the world a better place by donating money to worthy causes engaged in meaningful work.

Young Jewish Giving is having an event on Tuesday, March 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the JCC Auditorium. Three Rabbis and a lot of Mitzvot will feature Rabbis Abraham, Azriel and Dembitzer. The lively discussion will begin following the 6 p.m. dinner. All Omaha Jewish teens in grades 7-12 are invited to attend, whether they have a Young Jewish Giving account or not. The event is free, but reservations are required for dinner. To RSVP email Danielle at dgordman@jewishomaha.org by March 20.
Reviving the Ben Gurion Society
The Jewish Federation of Omaha is reviving the Ben Gurion Society for the local Jewish community. This national society is one that recognizes young adults who make contributions of $1,000 or more to their local Jewish Federation as a sign of their commitment to leadership in the community. If you are between the ages of 25-45 and have an interest in the Ben Gurion Society, please join your hosts Danny Cohn and Andrew Miller for cocktails and appetizers. The event will be held at their home, 11330 Pine Plaza, on March 25 from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

RSVP to Louri Sullivan at lsullivan@jewishomaha.org or call 402.334.6485.

Author Jason Gewirtz to Present the Story of the IDF'S Most Elite Unit
In an age of increasing sophistication in technology and military weapons, boots on the ground, ships on the sea, and planes in the air is insufficient. To maintain a strategic edge, Israel has created a special, secretive IDF unit called Talpiot. On Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Social Hall of the Jewish Community Center, former IDF soldier Jason Gewirtz will share his insights into the workings of this specialized unit by discussing his recent book, Israel's Edge: The Story of the IDF's Most Elite Unit - Talpiot.

This, That and the Other Thing
When you think of Israel and sports, you obviously think of THIS

THAT Jewish guy everyone seems to embrace is on tour once again. Here's the story and a brief Q&A in that is characteristically Billy Crystal.

THE OTHER THING
Even Moses couldn't believe it.
